CANTICO DEL SOLE – SOFIA GUBAIDULINA
per violoncello , percussioni e coro
Il Cantico del Sole (Canticle of the Sun) was composed by Gubaidulina in 1997 and was dedicated to the cellist Mstislav Rostropovich on the occasion of his seventieth birthday. Conceived for the cello, chorus, percussion and celesta, the work is divided into four sections and religiously follows the vernacular text of the Canticle of the creatures by St. Francis of Assisi. The first is devoted to the glorification of the Creator of the sun and moon, the second to the glorification of the Creator of the four elements, the third to the gift of life, and the last to the glorification of death.
